THE traditional opening of the year in Nines kicks off on Friday January 8 at BCI Stadium, Rarotonga, Cook Islands at 3.30pm local time.

Explaining the decision to shorten the event from three days to two, organiser Francis Toa said: “This is due in part to the reduced number of teams participating this year.
“We were hoping to have six open mens team, four womens team and four Under 18s teams. However, some clubs have cited difficulties in recruiting players.
“We are now left with four open mens team, three womens teams and two Under 18s teams.”
