COLOMBIA will host the country’s first national Nines championship in November.

The announcement comes as Sili Eels celebrate taking out the Palauli/Satupaitea Regional Nines in Samoa and Nane Brothers settle into their title as 2021 Port Moresby Suburban Nines champs.

The Colombian Nines will run on November 13 and 14 and feature teams from around Bogota as well as the Antioquia and Cundinamarca regions. There has been absolutely no rugby league in the South American nation last year or this due to Covid.

The first 13-a-side South American Championships are due to be held in Antioquia next year but the possible postponement of the World Cup could throw a spanner in the works with the Brazil women unavailable.

In Samoa, Pitonu’u Fields on the island of Savai’i was the venue as the Eels downed Vaega Satupaitea in the final. All teams were new to the sport. In the third-place play-off, Gataivai Cowboys beat Vailoa.

“The tournament was a joint collaboration between Rugby League Samoa, NRL in Samoa and the Palauli-Satupaitea Rugby Union,” the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Confederation explained on its website.

Kone Tigers Oval was the scene for the Port Moresby final, with Nane Brothers beat Mountain Bulls in the final. There was also a play-off for third, Kagua Woodmen outpointing Eastern End United.
