NINES action is reaching its crescendo in the Netherlands and Port Moresby while Papua New Guinea’s Central Province is bracing itself for a landmark series.

The Hiritano Super Nines kicks off this Friday at Bereina Station with 32 teams taking part, the tournament moving on five subsequent weekends to neighbouring towns.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands, the Nines have been played over the past three weekends in different cities.

On Saturday we had the series final, pitting week-three hosts Amsterdam Cobras against Den Haag Knights. Den Haag had won all previous matches on the day and  scored a resounding 24-10 win in the final to be named Netherlands champions for 2021.

Meanwhile the finalists for the Port Moresby men’s and women’s Nines competitions – also run over a number of weeks – have been finalised.

But be warned: these are gargantuan leagues! In all, 24 teams go through to the Cup, Plate and Bowl finals in the men with each competition played from the quarter-final stage.

In the women’s division, six sides progress and we already know Royals play Paga Panthers for the trophy.

The Port Moresby RFL has 14 registered clubs: Tarangau, Brothers, Magani, Hohola Flies, Hanuabada Hawks, Kone Storm, Souths, Dobo Warriors, Kone Tigers, Wests, Paga Panthers, Defence, Royals and the Butterflies.
