NINES will be played in Central America for the first time on Sunday with one of Nicaragua’s biggest population centres hosts a four-team tournament.

Rugby League is just two years old in the nation of 6.5 million, with four teams competing in the Campeonato Superior de Rugby League. Host city Chinandega is one of those teams but the Volcanos, as they are known, will split in three for this weekend’s historic event.

Joining them will be visiting Managua Diablos Rojos.

“The good thing about 9s is that instead of a team of 17 or 20 players getting a run, we have four teams of 15 so many more players are getting valuable game experience,” official Chris Reid said.

Close to 4000 players have already taken part this year in tournaments in locations as diverse as Rarotonga,Cook Islands, Accra Ghana and  Bangalore India – as well as hotbeds like Sydney and Christchurch.
