THE RFL, Britain’s governing body in rugby league, has made a move into the abbreviated version of the sport by launching a Women’s Super League Nines series.
Nines were previously played in the UK as far back as 1988 and the London Nines, run by independent promoter Graham Oliphant, is a regular fixture in the summer calendar.
But now the RFL are running their own tournament, involved all 12 Women’s Super League teams plus guests Bristol Golden Ferns, Catalans Dragons, Dublin City Exiles, London Broncos, Oxford Cavaliers and Salford Red Devils.
The first day of the series on May 1 will be a carnival-style, community based set of matches at Victoria Park in Warrington, during which young fans will be encouraged to mingle with their heroes.
Then on July 24, the top six sides will play off at AJ Bell Stadium in Salford to find a national champion.
“We’re really excited about what this tournament has to offer on and off the pitch,” said the RFL’s head of growth, Thomas Brindle. “Nines is an exciting spectacle, and we’ll see lots of fantastic players showcasing their skills together at Warrington and Salford.
“The festival approach at Warrington offers opportunities for complete novices, younger players and potential stars of tomorrow to come along and find out more about Women’s rugby league and how to get involved.
“Throughout the day we’ll have workshops connecting younger players with those at the top level, including topics such as body positivity and how to be physically prepared for the demands of the game. With entertainment throughout the day running alongside the action on the pitch, there’ll be something for everyone. It’s an event not to be missed.”
There has been speculation for some years of a Nines tournament for the men’s Super League.
