THE grand trophy for Nicaragua’s best men’s Nines team will be presented on May 9, it has been announced.
Nine-a-side rugby league arrived in Central America on Sunday with the four-team league opening and local Chinandega side Mercenarios topping the table after going through the day’s play undefeated.
It was originally intended that the best team at the end of Sunday’s matches would be awarded the NovoSports Cup, donated by Patreon supporters of Rugby League Nines and events company NovoSports.
But the trophy will instead be retained as the teams reconvene on April 11 at Chinandega, then at San José del Obraje on April 25 before a final at a venue to be determined on May 9.
Under the curious structure of the competition, each side played the same opponents twice at San Carlos Sports Fields, with Mercenarios beat BigOne 22-10 and 24-0.
