FIJI’S fledgling Nines series resumes this weekend with the Western State event in Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

The tournament is the second of three which will decide which sides progress to a new international tournament in Sigatoka in November.

Last week. the Eastern State Nines were held at Bidisi Park in Suva, with Kinoya Sea Eagles and Police Sharks declared the men’s co-winners and eight teams in all progressing in the series.

Now 20 men’s, four women’s and six youth teams will assemble on Saturday morning for the second instalment of the competition.

“It’s anyone’s game,” said tournament director Vela Tawake. “This is not the 13s game where traditional rivalries are easy to determine.

“We are seeing more younger and faster players emerge in the last two years and that makes the games more exciting.”

The Fiji Nines finals, with qualifiers from the two regional events, will be staged on April 16 and determine which four teams progress to the end-of-year-international event.

Play this weekend commences at 9am Saturday local time.
