SATURDAY’S State of Mind Nines in Yorkshire have been called off.
Twelve teams were to complete in the tournament at Shaw Cross Sharks to promote the mental health charity but promoter Brett Turner says the withdrawal of a couple of teams convinced him that perhaps he should have waited until 2019 to launch the concept.
“We had some drop outs in the last few weeks but to be fair I don’t know if it was a good idea to have the event on a bank holiday weekend in the first place,” he told rugbyleaguenines.com.
“I did it because it’s a free weekend for most teams.
“I do love the concept of Nines and would love to put an event on in the future. Maybe if I do, I’d be better speaking to (others) for some advice earlier in the piece and doing it with a bit more help rather than trying to do it myself.
“I’m really disappointed that it hasn’t worked this time but I can see some of my mistakes now I’ve stepped away from it. “
It’s still a big weekend in the Nines movement with the Hong Kong tournament taking place on Sunday. The Tongan national team has just been added.
A pioneering tournament was played in Argentina at the weekend. Full details to follow on this site.
