A NASTY leg cut to Larissa’s Georgios Gourgiotis has marred his club’s hosting of a new Greek Nines tournament.
Eyewitnesses say bone was exposed in the laceration and an ambulance was called. Gourgiotis is recovering in a local hospital.
Because of the time taken to treat the injury, the final between Aris and Attica was abandoned.
The tournament was triangular and each of the sides involved registered a victory; Aris were declared winners on points difference.
The first match Attica bagged a narrow 20-16 win against Aris, who backed up to score a handsome 28-4 triumph against the host team.
Given those first two results, Larissa’s 16-4 win over Attica in the final match was something of a shock. It left the three sides together on the top – or bottom, depending on your point of view – of the table.
A big win and narrow defeat therefore secured Aris the title
The Nines World Circuit moves this week from Greece to Norway, where the Oslo Nines will take place this Saturday.
Competing teams are: Sparbu Lumberjacks, Sagene IF, Tønsberg, Flekkefjord Tigers, Sandnes Raiders, Oslo Capitals, Swedish Roosters, Lillestrøm Lions, Porsgrunn Pirates.
